Description:

Brando Marlon

4pp AMS inscribed overall and signed by American actor Marlon Brando (1924-2004) as "Marlon Brando" (2), "Marlon" (1), "Brando" (1) and "Bran" (2) in blue ball point pen. On cream blue-lined notebook paper sheets hole-punched at left. In near fine condition, with overall toning and isolated yellow discolored spots to right edge of two of four pages. Each page measures 5.375" x 8.5".

These notebook pages give us insight into the actor's inner mind. Enclosed within are multiple partial and complete signatures, modified quotes, random thoughts, and possibly elocution exercises -- all in Brando's relaxed script. Brando's spelling errors and unique way of writing (sometimes starting and stopping writing the same word multiple times in a row) have not been changed.

Brando's signature appears six times in partial and complete form on a notebook page also inscribed: "the door was plainly apened and nothing was to be seen but so it is with all men the last death and the greatest … " Brando has inscribed parts of the "Peter Piper" tongue twister verso.

On another page, Brando refers to Shakespeare's comedy As You Like It (Act II, Scene VII), and also to Carson McCuller's novel The Heart is a Lonely Hunter published in 1940: "All the world's a stage and all the men and women mearly players -- but the heart is a lonely lonely hunter and to leave undiscovered all the great and ? parts of the mnip min mind."

Brando rejected the very idea of writing ideas down in a notebook, but did it anyway, writing: "to fill a book with nonsensical clutter is most asinine I ha I have absolutely no interest in this rid I iculous stupidity."

Marlon Brando was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Important People of the Century in 1999, and his career as an actor and director spanned five decades. Brando was a student of Stanislavski's system of acting, which viewed the character as a complete individual with inner motivations. Brando's acting debut in the 1950s coincided with the cinematic shift towards realism. Some of Brando's most popular movies include A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), On the Waterfront (1954), The Godfather (1972), and Apocalypse Now (1979).

An intriguing look into Brando's creative process, pulled from one of his notebooks!
