Monroe Marilyn

Marilyn Monroe Photo with U.S. Soldiers in Korea during Her Honeymoon with Joe DiMaggio

Original probably unpublished photograph, black & white, 10” x 8”. Top blank margin unevenly cut. Minor defects in blank margins and on surface, creases. Very good condition.

In February 1954, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio were newlyweds on a trip to Japan, when the bride took a detour to Korea to entertain the troops. She performed ten shows in four days, February 16-19, 1954, in front of audiences that totaled more than 100,000 soldiers. Later Monroe recalled that the trip “was the best thing that ever happened to me. I never felt like a star before in my heart. It was so wonderful to look down and see a fellow smiling at me.”

This photograph depicts Marilyn Monroe, someone seemingly adjusting something on her left shoulder, and Corporal Joseph Fishman, with camera in hand, which Fishman identified on verso as “that’s me working! Korea Feb 1954”.

Included is a photocopy of a 10” x 8” signed photograph with Corporal Joseph Fishman(“Love and Kisses / Marilyn Monroe”). Also present is a photocopy of a collage of six 3.75” x 5” photographs also taken on February 16, 1954. Four depict Marilyn Monroe alone (two performing in her purple cocktail gown), one is with Major General Lionel Charles McGarr who was commander of the 7th Infantry Division from October 1953 to May 1954, and one is with Maj. Gen. McGarr and Mrs. Lefty O’Doul. In two of the photographs, Marilyn is wearing a special Army jacket with numerous patches, including one imprinted “MONROE.”
