Maria Amalia
Spain, January 20, 1756
Maria Amalia of Saxony 1756 DS to Cardinal Millo
DS
A manuscript document signed by Maria Amalia of Saxony (1724-1760) as Queen Consort of Spain and the Two Sicilies. 1p, untranslated in Spanish, measuring 11" x 16", dated January 20, 1756. Signed at the conclusion "Yo La Reyna" (I, the Queen) and addressed to Giovanni Giacomo, Cardinal Millo (1695-1757). Within, she responds to a letter of the past December, offering support in his endeavors. Integral address leaf present on verso, with original seal having been torn. Exhibits moderate wear throughout, including damp staining and soiling at middle left, slight edge tearing, small wormholes, and toning at folds; isolated paper loss from seal removal, not affecting text. Good to fair condition overall- nice, clean signature.

Maria Amalia was Queen of Spain from August 10, 1759 until her death in 1760 as the wife of King Charles III (1716-1788). Previously, she had been Queen of Naples and Sicily since marrying Charles on June 19, 1738. Despite being an arranged marriage, the couple would become very close, with Maria Amalia holding great political influence throughout their relationship. As Queen of the Two Sicilies, she was known for ending the careers of politicians she disliked and eventually held a seat in the council of state starting in 1747. After Charles was named the King of Spain following the death of his half-brother Ferdinand VI, the two set off for Barcelona in 1759. There, Maria Amalia was reportedly distrustful of their foreign customs and died a year later at the age of 35.
