Marc Chagall Signed "Feathers In Bloom" Offset Lithographic Poster
Signed Artwork

A Contemporary Art Masterpieces offset lithographic poster after French-Russian artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985), "Les Plumes en Fleurs" ["The Feathers In Bloom"], boldly pencil-signed by the artist as "Marc Chagall" outside the image at lower right. Lacking a date, but the poster probably dates from the 1960s. N.p. The original artwork, a gouache and pastel drawing on paper, was created in 1943. Signed in stone as "Marc Chagall 1943" within the image at lower left. Printed with the artist's name, work title, publication, and copyright information outside the image along the bottom margin as: "Marc Chagall / Les Plumes en Fleurs / Published by Contemporary Art Masterpieces / Courtesy of the Louvre Museum, Paris." Expected wear including even light toning. The upper left corner is slightly wrinkled, and there are two minor closed tears found along the right edge. Currently wrapped behind plastic wrapping and resting (unknown mounting) on a piece of foamcore. Not examined out of the plastic. Else near fine and in vibrant colors! The poster measures approximately 22.375" x 28."

"Les Plumes en Fleur" depicts a white-headed rooster with dense blue under-plumage regarding a sort of reverse centaur: a blue-headed horse with human legs. The Surrealistic treatment of these fantastical creatures is typical of Chagall. The artist frequently depicted roosters from the 1920s-1940s. Chagall's roosters can be white, blue, red, and yellow, featuring multicolored combs and wattles; they are often accompanied by human figures depicted levitating horizontally, or dressed as a bride and groom, in a few notable examples. Roosters were commonly found in both Judaic traditions and in early 20th-C. Russian popular art, two possible sources of artistic inspiration for Chagall.
