Description:

Manuscript Ledger from 1819 Tracking Methodist Preachers Since Founding, Nearly 2,000 Names Organized Alphabetically & Chronologically

A manuscript ledger entitled "A Chronological and Alphabetical List, of all the Itinerant Preachers that Have traveled in the Wesleyan Methodist Connection, In Great Britain & Ireland. To which is added the Number of Missionaries on Foreign Stations, &c.," 1819. The volume contains the names of nearly 2,000 itinerant Methodist preachers in the United Kingdom from the inception of the religious revival movement in 1739 to 1819. Twice signed by record keeper Joseph Reeves, once as "Joseph Reeves" on the title page, and initialed as "J.R." on the last page. Rebound in modern black and gilt embossed binding with green marbleized endpapers. The front and back loose endpapers have been replaced. Isolated ink bleed-through, ghost ink impressions, water stains, and edge darkening. Minor loss to the lower right hand corner of the first few pages, and a few inscriptions added in throughout by a modern collector. Else near fine. 7.625" x 9.25" x .5." 8vo. Runs approximately 72pp.

Joseph Reeves carefully organized the 1,875 entries in this hand-ruled ledger in two ways, alphabetically and chronologically. The entries list the preacher's name, the date itinerant preaching began, miscellaneous notes, and the year of the minister's death, when known. The third column is by far the most interesting. Each preacher's church membership status is noted by exception; preachers were categorized as active, died, "desisted" (voluntary departure) or "excluded" (involuntary departure). Special achievements, like a record number of sermons delivered, are noted. In one instance, Reeves recorded that a Rev. Will Turton, who preached between 1798-1818, was "A Man of Colour." Sudden deaths from drowning or small pox were dutifully entered.

A handful of the most historically prominent Methodist preachers have brief biographical descriptions inserted into the third column. Thus, readers can find a summary of the accomplishments of John Wesley (1703-1791), founder of the Methodist movement; Samuel Wesley (1707-1788), noted Methodist hymnodist; and George Whitefield (aka Whitfield) (ca. 1714-1770), the influential preacher in America. Other Methodist itinerant preachers were lawyers, medical doctors, academics, and regular folk.

Two appendices at the end of the volume are entitled "The Number of Missionaries on Foreign Stations Under they [sic] Directions of the British Conference &c." and "Presidents of the British Conference." The second appendix shows that 1,676 Methodist preachers practiced on five continents in places like France, Gibraltar, Sri Lanka, India, Australia, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Canada, the United States, and the West Indies. Methodism was rapidly propagated thanks to vigorous missionizing on the part of movement leaders. The religious revival movement especially appealed to the poor and disenfranchised. Today, it's estimated that there are about 70,000,000 practicing Methodists.
