Mancunian Anti-Lincoln Pamphlet Supporting the Confederacy and Cotton Trade
Pamphlet
An unusual British publication in support of the Confederacy entitled "Papers for the People - No. IV: The Principles and Policy of President Lincoln." Manchester: Guardian Steam Printing Offices, [1864]. 4pp, issued by the Southern Independence Association in Manchester, England. The pamphlet presents a strong Confederate perspective on Lincoln, accusing him of being a hypocrite and a tyrant: it portrays Lincoln as an unremarkable lawyer who became President by accident and a mere puppet controlled by his Secretary of State, William Seward; it quotes Lincoln's 1848 speech where he supported the right of people to revolt against oppressive governments and highlights how he is now denying the South the same right he advocated for; it attempts to debunk the idea that Lincoln opposed slavery; and it criticizes Lincoln's call for troops and financial support to suppress the rebellion, arguing that the North is sacrificing lives and money in a fruitless war. The publication appears to have been unbound from a larger volume, with small binding holes along the left edge. Light toning and faint soiling throughout. Overall very fine.

Manchester, England was a city divided during the American Civil War, despite being an ocean away from the actual fighting. While a good many of its citizens were dedicated to the anti-slavery movement and transatlantic abolition, there was a sizeable population who sought to support the Confederacy. One of the most pressing debates of British politics at the time was whether or not the country should intervene in the conflict. Among the most prominent groups of Confederate supporters was the Manchester Southern Club, or the Southern Independence Association as it became known after October 1863. The club drew a great deal of support from workingmen and tradesmen negatively impacted by the national cotton shortage — a direct consequence of the Union's blockading of southern ports. Many felt they had to take a stand to protect their livelihoods and believed the British government had to recognize the Confederacy as an independent nation to end the cotton shortage. At its peak the club had 47 branches throughout the UK, and its membership included members of the House of Lords and House of Commons, clergymen, lawyers, magistrates, and merchants.
