Mamie Eisenhower (9) TLS to French Correspondent, 1952-1964
Archive
A collection of typed correspondence signed "Mamie Doud Eisenhower", all addressed to one Josiane Leroux (later Snyder). Totaling 9 pages in all, ranging in date from January 23, 1952 to November 14, 1964. Highlights include four letters as First Lady, written on White House letterhead, plus three sent while the couple was stationed in France during Eisenhower's term as Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Please see accompanying images for further information on contents. Varying degrees of expected letter folds, uneven toning, and light creasing throughout. Areas of isolated soiling present to some. Overall, very good with bold signatures.

Excerpts include:

-January 23, 1952: "Both General Eisenhower and I are pleased to receive your nice comments on the magazine article. We particularly delighted in your reference to Pennsylvania and our little farm at Gettysburg; it is truly a picturesque section of the United States."

-April 15, 1953: "I am so happy to learn of your marriage, and the President and I send you both our best wishes for a lifetime of happiness. It was kind of you to write to me. It did bring back memories of Paris in the Spring-- although I hardly needed your letter to remind me for Washington is, shall I say, almost as lovely!"

-December 3, 1957: "It was kind of you to write me in regard to the President's illness, and also to send me Christmas greetings in advance of the holiday season. We are all very thankful that the President is progressing so wonderfully, and every day shows improvement in his condition."

-October 15, 1959: "I was delighted to see these writeups of the President's visit there. How well I remember from my days in France the little children wearing smocks-- they are so quaint. I gave the President your birthday wishes, and he was very pleased and appreciative."
