Major General Daniel Denison 1677 Ipswich Land Grant Signed

1p, measuring 8" x 12", Essex County, Ipswich, Massachusetts, dated February 20, 1678. A land grant for a house, barn, and orchard belonging to Symon Stace, Richard Hubbard, and William Hubbard, sold to Killecues Ross for £20. Signed by all three men, with three witness signatures. With three black wax stamps next to each signature. Countersigned at the conclusion by Major General Daniel Denison. Flattened folds, with slight creasing at the corners. Uneven edges. A few small holes at the folds. Minor toning and foxing throughout.

A document from the early settlement period of New England, during the reign of King Charles II. Ipswich was founded by John Winthrop the Younger in 1630 and quickly became a farming and trade town, along with having a quickly burgeoning lace-making industry (known as Ipswich Lace). Ipswich is also where one of the first instances of colonial rebellion in America took place. In 1687, residents rose up in protest to a tax imposed by governor Edmund Andros, claiming taxation without representation. Although it would be nearly 100 years until America gained its freedom, this incident is why Ipswich claims itself to be the "Birthplace of American Independence".

Daniel Denison (1612-1682) was an early settler and political/military leader of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. During King Philip's War in 1675, he was the commander of the Massachusetts Militia but was unable to serve in the field due to illness.
