Description:

Madame Chiang Kai-shek Thank You Letter Signed During Convalescence

1p, measuring 8.5" x 11", Taipei, Taiwan, dated October 7, 1974. A typed letter signed "May Ling Soong Chiang" and addressed to Dr. Eleanor Webster and Dr. D. Widmayer. Madame Chiang thanks the two professors for their gift of the book "Wellesley College and Community", which she read during her convalescence, and expresses her disappointment at not having seen them during their visit. She has written the salutation at the top in her own hand, along with the close of the letter, "with best wishes, Yours cordially, May Ling Soong Chiang." Accompanied by the original envelope.

Together with the letter is a letter from Madame Chiang's secretary, "Pearl Chen", dated September 16, 1974. Addressed to Dr. Eleanor Webster, Chen sends newspaper clippings of a recent event they attended at the Chungshan Building. Accompanied by the original envelope. Both letters have flattened mail folds and light toning. There is a small tear to the top of the second letter. Both boldly signed. Expected wear to both envelopes.

Soong Mei-ling (1898-2003), also known as Madame Chiang Kai-shek or Madame Chiang, was First Lady of the Republic of China from 1950-1975. She was the wife of President Chiang Kai-shek and was active in the political landscape of her country. It was likely also around this time that her husband had suffered a recent heart attack and a bout of pneumonia, and he would die the following year. Madame Chiang herself was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1975 and had to undergo two mastectomies.
