Description:

M. Sendak Signed "Where the Wild Things Are" 4 Fine Art Prints

Four fine art prints reproduced from Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" (New York: Harper & Row, 1963). One of the most iconic children's books written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak (1928-2012), "Where the Wild Things Are" was also the recipient of the 1964 Caldecott Award. The four prints include "Let the Wild Rumpus Start," "Hanging from Tree Limbs," "King of the Wild Things," and "The Morning After" and are all pen signed by the artist as "Maurice Sendak" in the lower right corners. Copyright information is printed verso. A few gentle wrinkles affecting the lower left corners of each print well outside the image. "Hanging from Tree Limbs" also has a few wrinkles in the upper left corner not affecting the image, else near fine. The actual size of three of the four prints is 23.75" x 14.625." The actual size of the smaller fourth print is 23.5" x 11."

The four fine art prints were among twenty images selected by Sendak for his portfolio "Pictures by Maurice Sendak" (New York: Harper & Row, 1971). Sendak curated this collection to include his favorite images from eight different titles to be enjoyed as art prints without necessarily being tied to the related text. The four images from "Where the Wild Things Are" were double-page spreads in the original book. Sendak's original artwork, then housed at the Sendak Archives at the Rosenbach Museum & Library (Philadelphia), was carefully rephotographed in order to create these fine art reproductions. Each of the images was perfectly reproduced, and for the first time could be viewed on single sheets of paper without center creases or divisions.

Maurice Sendak was an award-winning children's book illustrator and author. Always interested in design, Sendak began his career by illustrating comic books and designing toy company shop windows. "Where The Wild Things Are" was followed by "In the Night Kitchen" (1970) and "Outside Over There" (1981). Sendak also created, wrote, and produced animated children's television programs.
