Lyndon B. Johnson TLS Addressed to 1st U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria Less Than 1 Month after JFK's Assassination

1p typed letter signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-1973) as "Lyndon B. Johnson" in black felt tip pen near bottom right. Written in Washington, D.C. on December 18, 1963, less than one month after John F. Kennedy's assassination. On watermarked cream paper with "The White House / Washington" letterhead. A large diagonal fold in the lower left corner. Scattered foxing and a paper clip ghost impression at upper left. Else very good to near fine. 6.75" x 8.875". Also accompanied by the original transmittal envelope addressed to "The Honorable Joseph Palmer 2d / American Ambassador / Lagos". Similar foxing and paper clip impression, else very good.

In this letter addressed to Joseph Palmer II (1914-1994), U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, President Johnson wrote in part:

"I want to express my personal appreciation for the outstanding manner in which you have represented the United States as our first Ambassador to the Republic of Nigeria for the past three years.

Your insight and advice have been consistently valuable in helping shape United States policy and in strengthening relations between the two countries…"

President Dwight D. Eisenhower had appointed Palmer as America's first Ambassador to Nigeria in late September 1960, just a week before the west African nation had entered the British Commonwealth of Nations on October 1, 1960. (This in advance of Nigeria's declaration of independence and their establishment of a sovereign republic three years later.) Palmer had joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1939 and served in various posts in Africa and Washington, D.C. prior to his ambassadorial appointment. One month after Palmer's term as U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria expired, LBJ appointed him Director General of the Foreign Service. Palmer also served as U.S. Ambassador to Libya between 1969-1972.
