Description:

Lyndon B. Johnson TLS 3 Days Before Leaving Presidency, "Time… to close the pages of this chapter…"

TLS, 1p, measuring 6.75" x 9", dated January 17, 1969, Washington, D.C. A brief letter signed "LBJ" at conclusion and addressed to Omar Burleson, a member of the House of Representatives from Texas. Sent just three days before leaving office on January 20, Johnson thanks Burleson for his support during his time in office. This letter comes as a result of Johnson's announcement in early 1968 that he would not run for reelection, likely due to health concerns, that surprised the nation. Very minimal wear, including slight toning to lower half of page and flattened fold at middle. Near fine overall.

In full:

"The time has come to close the pages of this chapter of my life and return home.
Before I leave Washington, I would like you to know that there will always be a place of warm affection and respect for you in my heart.
The years have been richer for me because of our friendship."

Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908-1973) was an American politician who served as the 36th president of the United States from 1963 to 1969. He previously served as the 37th vice president from 1961 to 1963 under President John F. Kennedy, and was sworn in shortly after Kennedy's assassination. A democrat from Texas, Johnson also served as a U.S. representative, U.S. Senator and the Senate's majority leader. He holds the distinction of being one of the few presidents who served in all elected offices at the federal level.

Omar Burleson (1906-1991) was an attorney, judge, FBI agent and veteran of World War II when he was first elected in 1946 as a Democratic U.S. Representative from Texas's 17th congressional district. He was re-elected to Congress from this rural district for more than 30 years, resigning in December 1978 rather than run again for office.
