Lyndon B. Johnson PSA Authenticated and Slabbed Boldly Signed 1964 Civil Rights Act Souvenir Typescript
DS

A souvenir typescript of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, boldly signed by 36th U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-1973) as "Lyndon B Johnson" at center. N.d., n.p. The excerpt of the legislation - specifically the preamble and the beginning of the "Title I - Voting Rights" section - is printed on watermarked paper that was previous to the printing signed on blank paper by LBJ, and then after printing encapsulated by PSA/DNA certified as authentic. The left edge is slightly deckled and trimmed. Else near fine. The actual size of the typescript is 5.75" x 9.125" while the slab measures 9.625" x 13.25." x .25."

As stated in the preamble, the Civil Rights of 1964 (Pub. L. 88-352) stated explicitly that it was: "An Act To enforce the constitutional right to vote, to confer jurisdiction upon the district courts of the United States to provide injunctive relief against discrimination in public accommodations, to authorize the Attorney General to institute suits to protect constitutional rights in public facilities and public education, to extend the Commission on Civil Rights, to prevent discrimination in federally assisted programs, to establish a Commission on Equal Employment Opportunity, and for other purposes."

President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Civil Rights Act of 1964 on July 2, 1964, following its passage in the U.S. House of Representatives (290-130) in February 1964, and its approval by the U.S. Senate (73-27) in June 1964. This keystone piece of legislation prohibited discrimination based on race, sex, religion, or country of origin. Under the law, all Americans were guaranteed equal protection in public facilities, polling places, courtrooms, workplaces, and schools.

Interestingly, the "Title I - Voting Rights" section of the 1964 Civil Rights Act featured here outlines requirements for voting access, which in 1964 still included literacy testing; these were banned in the subsequent Voting Rights Act of 1965.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
