Lyndon B. Johnson Inaugural Ticket 1965, PSA/DNA EX 5
Ticket/Invitation

A gold-foiled ticket for an "honored guest" to attend the Inauguration of Lyndon B. Johnson and Vice President Hubert Humphrey on January 20, 1965. It measures 6" x 2.5" and is conserved in a PSA/DNA slab measuring 9.5" x 4.5". Graded EX 5.

The ticket features Johnson and Humphrey's portraits superimposed over an image of the White House on verso, and admits the bearer to Stand 2, Row 8, Seat 171.

Johnson's inaugural speech highlighted a vision for justice that includes all Americans, portending future challenges and underscoring the need for racial justice. Johnson calls America a nation of believers in justice and liberty and union, where every man must one day be free and specifically brings in the issue of faith in the process. He also explored the semi-mystical origins of the American experience, arguing that the "Great Society" was the latest ideological offshoot of these origins and that it was consistent with the national ethos.

In very small part: "…Even now, a rocket moves toward Mars. It reminds us that the world will not be the same for our children, or even for ourselves in a short span of years. The next man to stand here will look out on a scene that is different from our own…Ours is a time of change--rapid and fantastic change--bearing the secrets of nature, multiplying the nations, placing in uncertain hands new weapons for mastery and destruction, shaking old values and uprooting old ways…Our destiny in the midst of change will rest on the unchanged character of our people and on their faith…".
