Includes:
1) ALS dated February 16, 1889, reading in part: "I regret that I no longer have autographs of General Garfield for distribution."

2) ALS dated January 6, 1898, reading in full: "West Mentor, O[hio].
Jan. 6th, 1898
Dear Mrs. Mathews,
The inclosed [sic] check is for Charlotte's tuition for the winter term. I have not yet received the bill for her music lessons, nor for whatever unpaid accounts there may be for last-term, or I would inclose a check for those also.
Charlotte's father has sent a check to be appropriated for her benefit and I have decided to make her responsible for its use for incidental expenses and clothing. I thought the letter would be a check on useless incidentals. And I will supply sums directly to her to simplify the matter and relieve you from any responsibility concerning these expenses. Of course she will be subject to your rules and permissions as heretofore.
She is anxious to begin French but I have told her it must be as you decide. Yours sincerely and with all best wishes for the New Year.
Lucretia R. Garfield"
