Lowell Mason Signed Musical Manuscript, "Nearer, My God, to Thee"

1p AMQS inscribed and signed by American composer Lowell Mason (1792-1872) as "Lowell Mason" at top right. The handwritten sheet music of "Nearer, My God, to Thee" is on pale blue paper in near fine condition. Expected wear including paper folds. Partly adhered to a scrapbook album page verso also featuring the signature clip of "J.P. Kennedy M.C." The signed sheet music measures approximately 10" x 8."

The sheet music, comprising the first two and a half lines or sixteen bars of melody, are recorded here in two clefs in G Major and in 6/4 time. The piece is titled at left, and credited/signed at right: "Hymn by Mrs. S.F. Adams. Music by Lowell Mason." Below, an unknown hand identified the sheet music as "Autograph Music Written by L. Mason."

"Nearer, My God, to Thee," also known by its alternate title "Bethany," was composed by Lowell Mason and published in The Sabbath Hymn and Tune Book circa 1859. British poet Sarah Flower Adams (1805-1848) had written a version of its lyrics in 1841. In modern popular culture, the hymn is often associated with maritime disasters.

Lowell Mason composed over 1600 hymns throughout his career as a songwriter, music educator, and choirmaster. Mason is widely credited with introducing music education into public schools, and also with increasing congregants' participation in church services.
