Description:

Stoneman George 1822 - 1894 Lovely Major General George Stoneman signature clip with portrait engraving
Signature clip, 3.5" x 1.5", inlaid to another page of 7" x 10.75". Signed and dated by George Stoneman in full signature of 'George Stoneman / Maj Genl / Com of 23 Corp". Accompanied by a J. C. Buttre engraving of George Stoneman, 7" x 10.75" with small corner chip. Both near fine, with some toning.

Stoneman was a US Army cavalry officer, trained at West Point, where his roommate was Stonewall Jackson. In the Civil War, he became Adjutant to George B. McClellan, who did not appreciate the use of centralized cavalry, and was therefore outperformed by the Confederates, who did. At Chancellorsville, under Joseph Hooker, Stoneman failed in an ambitious attempt to penetrate behind enemy lines, getting bogged down at an important river crossing. Hooker's sharp criticism of Stoneman may have been partly aimed at deflecting the heavy blame being directed at himself for the loss of this major battle that most generals believed to be winnable. While commanding cavalry under Sherman in Georgia, Stoneman was captured, but soon exchanged. In the last weeks of the war, he led raids into North Carolina and Virginia that inspired the song "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"

J.C. Buttre was an American steel-plate engraver and lithographer from the mid 1800's , responsible for some 3 000 engraved portraits of American political, naval and military personalities. This is such an example of his work. A Lovely set that would present well framed together.
