After the assignation of Lincoln in 1865 the U.S. entered a prolong period of mourning. Mourning cards were printed and widely distributed across the country, often collected in family bibles, displayed in homes and given as keepsakes during public memorial services.

These cards reflect Victorian-era mourning traditions where death was marked with elaborate rituals, physical items such as photos, cards and jewelry. Mourning cards served not only as reminders of grief but also as political symbols as Lincoln was revered to many as the savoir of the Union.
