Description:

Lord Lovat Sends a Plea to the Duke of Cumberland Less Than 1 Year Before he was Sentenced to Death for Treason

ROYALTY. Copy of Letter from Simon Frazer to the Duke of Cumberland, Signed in Print, “L-----T”, 1p, June 16, 1746, Fort William, 7.5” x 12”. Flattened folds with some separation, paper loss to bottom edge, soiling, creasing, else Good to Very Good.

Simon Frazer, 11th Lord Lovat, writes from Fort William less than one year before his death by beheading. His letter, in part, “This letter is most humbly addressed to your Royal Highness, by the very unfortunate Simon Frazer of L-----t. I durst not presume to solicite or petition your Royal Highness for any Favour…I did more essential Service to your Royal Family, in suppressing the great Rebellion in 1715, with the Hazard of my Life…for which I had three Letters of Thanks from my Royal Master…Therefore the gracious King was as good as his Word to me; for as soon as I arrived at Court, and was introduced to the King by the late Duke of Argyle, I became by Degrees to be as great a Favourite as was about Court of Scotsmen: And I often carried your Royal Highness in my Arms…to hold you up to your Royal Grandfather so that he might embrace you. Now, Sir, all I have to say in my present Circumstances is, that if your Royal Highness will be pleased to extend your Goodness towards me, in a generous and compassionate Manner, in my present deplorable Situation, if I have the Honour to kiss your Royal Highness’s Hands, I would easily demonstrate to you, that I can do more Service to the King and Government...Major General Campbell told me, that he had the Honour to acquaint your Royal Highness, that he was sending me to Fort William, and that he beg’d of your Royal Highness to order a Litter to be made for me, to carry me to Fort Augustus, as I am in such a Condition that I am not able to stand, walk or ride.”

Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat (c. 1667-1747) was a Scottish Jacobite and Chief of Clan Fraser of Lovat, known for his feuding and changes of allegiance. He was nicknamed “The Fox”. In 1715, he had been a supporter of the House of Hanover, but in 1745 he changed sides and supported the Stuart claim on the crown of the United Kingdom. Lovat was among the Highlanders defeated at the Battle of Culloden and convicted of treason against the Crown, following which he was sentenced to death and subsequently beheaded.

Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-1765) was the third and youngest son of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland and his wife, Caroline of Ansbach. He was Duke of Cumberland from 1726. He is best remembered for his role in putting down the Jacobite Rising at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, which made him immensely popular throughout parts of Britain. He is often referred to by the nickname given to him by his Tory opponents, “Butcher” Cumberland. Despite his triumph at Culloden, he had a largely unsuccessful military career. Between 1748 and 1755 he attempted to enact a series of army reforms that were resisted by the opposition and by the army itself. Following the Convention of Klosterzeven in 1757, he never again held active military command and switched his attentions to politics and horse racing.
