Description:

Lindbergh & R. Orteig Signed Sheet Just 2 Weeks After Historic Flight

A sketch sheet signed and dated by Lindbergh "Charles A. Lindbergh" and inscribed by Orteig "Le bonheur á Biarritz etait presque complet. La charmante Yvonne est venue et maintenant tout es parfait. Raymond Orteig" (Happiness in Biarritz was almost complete. The charming Yvonne came and now everything is perfect). On verso is a delightful ink and watercolor sketch of a mounted hunting scene with sporting dogs. The sketch is inscribed "For Mademoiselle Yvonne's wonderful book." 2pp (front and back), measuring 7" x 9.25", n.p., dated June 3, 1927 and August 22, 1928. This page has clearly been removed from a larger sketchbook, with a slightly rough left edge. Light edge toning but boldly signed by both. Very fine.

Charles Lindbergh (1902-1974), a former U.S. Air Mail pilot, is best known for making his nonstop flight from New York to Paris, the first solo transatlantic flight. His trip took place on May 20–21, 1927, meaning he signed this sheet just two weeks after making history. Raymond Orteig (1870-1939) was a French American hotel owner in New York City who established the $25,000 Orteig Prize in 1919 for the first non-stop transatlantic flight between New York City and Paris. The prize would be claimed eight years later by Charles Lindbergh.
