Description:

Lincoln's Presidential Race and Battle of Petersburg, Lot of 2 Striking Artworks

Lot is comprised of:

1) Original Hand Colored Currier & Ives Lithograph, "Battle of Petersburg VA  April 2nd, 1865", 14" x 10".  Uniformly toned, some chipping to edges.  Verso has dampstaining with minor show-through to front, tape repair of tears to two small areas. Very lovely and worthy of framing.

This powerful scene depicts the third Battle of Petersburg, also known as the Breakthrough at Petersburg. Blue uniformed soldiers approach center from right, one holding an American flag.  This was a decisive Union assault on the Confederate trenches.  It ended the Siege of Petersburg and began General Robert E. Lee’s retreat to the west, where he hoped to obtain supplies and link up with Joseph E. Johnston’s army in North Carolina. On April 3, 1865, Richmond fell to Union forces.  A major objective of the war since 1861 had finally been achieved.  One week later, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, ending the Civil War.

2) [Abraham Lincoln]. Reprint of a Political Cartoon Favoring Lincoln in 1860 in his Campaign against Douglas, Breckenridge, and Bell. 10" x 8".  Adhered to a backing for an overall size of 14" x 11".  Handwritten notes to margins and verso of backing.  Verso of backing, "Used: Picture History of the Presidents / Volume: 5 / Page: 426".  From the American Heritage Publishing Archives.

This reprint, "The Presidential Office / A Political Race", features the four candidates running in the 1860 presidential election, Abraham Lincoln for the Republican Party, John Bell for the Constitutional Union Party, Stephen Douglas for the northern Democratic Party, and John Breckinridge for the southern Democratic Party. The cartoon depicts a long-limbed Abraham Lincoln sprinting ahead of his opponents as they race on a circular track. The text from left to right reads: John Bell, "Bless my soul I give up"; John C. Breckinridge, "That long legged Abolitionist is getting ahead of us after all"; Stephen Douglas, "I never run so in my life".
