Lincoln's Inaugural Ball Invitation - A Truly Rare Example!
Ticket/Invitation

Original invitation, engraved by Dempsey & O'Toole, to the National Inauguration Ball held on March 4, 1865, celebrating the second inauguration of President Abraham Lincoln and the inauguration of Vice President Andrew Johnson. The ornately designed invitation features finely detailed engraved portraits of Lincoln and Johnson, flanked by two patriotic American eagles perched atop Corinthian columns. The central text invites Miss M. J. Mason, and formally requests her presence at the event. Below, a list of distinguished managers is printed, including prominent political and military figures of the time. The Latin phrases "E Pluribus Unum" and "We Are One and Indissoluble" are inscribed on banners wrapped around the columns, symbolizing the unity of the nation as the Civil War neared its conclusion. Some flattened folds and toning. Measures 7.5" x 10.5."

The 1865 Inaugural Ball was a grand and historic event, held on March 6, 1865, at the Patent Office in Washington, D.C., now home to the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery. The lavish celebration welcomed thousands of guests, including prominent political leaders, military officers, and dignitaries. The event was a moment of both celebration and solemnity, as the nation was still embroiled in the final months of the Civil War. Lincoln's presence at the ball was significant, as he had just delivered his famous second inaugural address two days earlier, emphasizing themes of national reconciliation and healing.
