Lincoln Partner Stephen T. Logan "Logan and Lincoln" Help an Administrator Settle an Estate in Sangamon County, Illinois
AD

[ABRAHAM LINCOLN.] Stephen T. Logan, Endorsement on Thomas Moffett, Autograph Document, Account and Receipt in case of Wineman v. Swaney et al., filed August 22, 1844, Springfield, Illinois. 2 pp., 7.5" x 3". Irregular left edge, not affecting text; toning; very good.

When William S. Swaney died in 1842, he owned 68 acres of land and three lots in Auburn, Illinois. His estate also owned debts totaling $1,529.26. The probate court appointed Philip Wineman as the administrator of Swaney's estate. Wineman retained Stephen T. Logan and Abraham Lincoln and sued Swaney's heirs to sell the land to pay the debts of the estate. In November 1843, the court ruled for Wineman and ordered him to sell the land. He sold it at public auction on January 27, 1844, for a total of $303.

As this account filed with Swaney's estate makes clear, Logan and Lincoln received $10 from the estate for their legal services, though in two separate payments of $8.34 and $1.66. Logan and Lincoln's claim was in the 2nd class, and in August 1844, Probate Judge Thomas Moffett ordered Wineman to pay the 1st class claims in full and the 2nd class claims pro rata ($8.34 for Logan and Lincoln). In April 1845, Judge Moffett ordered Wineman to pay the balance of the 1st and 2nd class claims entirely ($1.66 for Logan and Lincoln) and a small part of the 4th class claims pro rata.
