Description:

Abraham Lincoln
Washington, DC, April 19, 1865
Lincoln Funeral Ticket for Bearer to Sit in the South Section
Ticket/Invitation
An original ticket to the funeral of President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865). Washington, D.C., April 19, 1865. The ticket admits the Bearer to the Executive Mansion, noting "South" at top, referring to the section of the room where the bearer was to sit. 1p, on a black-bordered card measuring 5" x 3.25". Expected handling wear includes light soiling, spotting, and rubbing. Very minor corner wear. Recipient's partial thumbprint appears at bottom right. In very good plus condition. A similar ticket, for seating in the "North" section, sold for nearly $4,700 in our December 14, 2022 auction!

On Wednesday, April 19, 1865, some six hundred mourners entered the Executive Mansion to attend the funeral of Abraham Lincoln. The East Room was transformed into a viewing area, with Lincoln's open coffin in the center on a raised platform with a black canopy. Seated around the coffin were Robert and Tad Lincoln and some of their mother's relatives, along with General Ulysses S. Grant. The brief service was led by an Episcopalian priest, with an additional three clergymen – a Presbyterian, a Methodist and a Baptist – who offered prayers and short sermons. Inconsolable, Mary Todd Lincoln, did not attend the funeral. She had previously been banished from the bedside of her dying husband due to hysterical crying, and it is possible that she had been advised not to attend the event. During this period in time, such public outpourings of grief were seen as improper for a lady. The new president, Andrew Johnson, didn't even pay her a visit or write a note of sympathy.
