Description:

Lincoln Abraham

Lincoln Association, Christopher Bush Manuscript Document

Manuscript document signed, single page on laid paper, 8" x 7."  Dated '"1801," and signed in another hand for Christopher Bush as "Christopher Bush."  Bush was illiterate and often just signed with an "x," so others would sign on his behalf. Document with expected folds and toning of a summons for the following persons to assist in an arrest. Near fine with strong vibrant ink. Ex. Norman Boas, Seaport Autographs, Ex. Christies 2017.

Born in Holland, Bush came to America in 1750. During the American Revolution, in April 1780, with his family and that of Michael Leonard. He descended the Monongahela River in Pennsylvania in a frail boat, then down the Ohio River, settling at the mouth of Hardin's Creek (now known as Sinking River). The area is now referred to as Hardinsburg, Kentucky. Here, they and other settlers built a fort and a blockhouse, at times interrupted by unexpected Indian attacks. Eventually Bush became a farmer, and by 1795 had acquired over 2000 acres of land in Hardin and Breckenridge Counties. As Constable of Hardin County he was most noted for his arrest of Ninian Edwards the future Governor of Illinois Territory. He was also a road viewer and captain of patrollers. Thomas Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln's father, was one of Bush's patrollers; later he married Bush's daughter, Sarah.

Bush was also a friend of Hannaniah Lincoln, a cousin of Abraham Lincoln, the President's grandfather. In 1795, Hannaniah Lincoln, Christopher Bush, and others were plaintiffs involved in the first lawsuit ever tried in Hardin County. Christopher Bush and his wife Hannah had nine children, including Sarah who married Daniel Johnston, jailer of Hardin County. After he died, in 1819 she married Thomas Lincoln, President Abraham Lincoln's father. Christopher Bush was illiterate so he would sign with an "X" as he did on his last will and testament. At times, others signed his name for him.
