Description:

Lincoln Assassination Letter, Remarks on Death & Account of Local Funeral Service

A 4pp autographed letter on bifolium written thirteen days after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln by a citizen of Medina [possibly Ohio] reacting to the President's death and a funeral service that followed at their local church. Within, they discuss their feelings toward the late President and describe how the church was decorated for mourning in his honor. Exhibits crease lines at far left edge present to all pages, with areas of scattered soiling and minor staining to rest. Else, very good with interesting contents!

An excerpt from page 4 reads in part:
"…I suppose the village is draped in mourning for our beloved president. Erwin did not vote for him but he felt terribly when he heard he was dead. I never thought he cared so much for him. Our church was beautifully trimmed. The pulpit is frescoed from near the ceiling black was lining in festerous and just under the center a photograph of Lincoln draped with crape and a large crape bow with yard long ends hung over it. It looked so mournful I could hardly help weeping when I looked it. I hope Johnson wont be "over and above" [lenient?] with them, the [scamps?]…"

After Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, a three-week series of events was held to mourn the death and memorialize the life of the 16th president of the United States. Mourned in both the North and South, a notable component of the country's grief could be seen in the form of the President's funeral train which made several stops on its way to Springfield, IL. While it did not stop in Medina specifically, it is possible it passed through the city, causing the community to join in mourning at their local church almost two weeks after the assassination. Regardless, the correspondent's express of emotion at viewing the funeral scene is evident, helping to display the shock many Americans felt, even those critical of his policies, following the assassination.
