Lincoln Assassination: Crane & Woodward DS by Surgeons Who Attended Lincoln and Garfield Assassinations! Truly Incredible & One of a Kind!
PPDS
Partially printed document signed, dated March 11, 1868, Washington D.C., on Surgeon General's Office stationery granting a leave of absence to a hospital steward in the U.S. Army. The document is approved and signed by C. H. Crane, who was one of the surgeons at Lincoln's deathbed. Coincidentally, the form is filled out and also signed by J. J. Woodward who recorded the autopsy on Lincoln's head and also attended to President James A. Garfield between his shooting and death. Woodward would also record the autopsy of President Garfield. A unique connection document to two presidential assassinations. Some repair and toning, barely visible and a slight smudge to Crane's bold signature. The document measures 8" x 5."

Dr. Charles H. Crane, was one of the attending physicians for President Abraham Lincoln after he was shot by assassin John Wilkes Booth. Arriving at the Petersen House where Lincoln was taken for an attempt at saving his life, Crane provided vital medical care and support. His efforts were instrumental in offering comfort to the President and his family in his final hours.

Dr. Joseph Janvier Woodward, a distinguished U.S. Army surgeon, played a pivotal role in the medical examination of President Abraham Lincoln following his assassination, performing the autopsy on Lincoln's head with Dr. Edward Curtis. His detailed report is a key historical document. Despite suffering a broken leg in early 1881, Woodward resumed his work at the Army Medical Museum and later attended President James A. Garfield after Garfield was fatally shot, meticulously documenting his autopsy as well.
