This fascinating autograph album was compiled by Major John S. Schultz, an Adjutant General under Darius N. Couch on behalf of Mrs. Couch in aid of the U.S. Christian Commission. The front cover reads “These autographs were collected by Maj. John S Schultz A. G. of the 'Depart. of the Susquehanna', Maj Gen. D.N. Couch comd’ng for the fair at Chambersburg per Mrs. D.N. Couch President in aid of the U.S. Christian Commission. May 1864.” Just two months later on July 30, 1864, Brigadier General John McCausland and 2,800 Confederate cavalrymen entered Chambersburg and demanded $100,000 in gold or $500,000 in greenbacks. The residents of Chambersburg failed to raise the ransom, and McCausland ordered his men to burn the town. Flames destroyed more than 500 structures which left more than 2,000 homeless. Chambersburg was the only Northern town the Confederates destroyed, and the attack helped rally Union troops, who used the cry: “Remember Chambersburg”, and spurred the Union Army to take an aggressive approach which would lead to Lee’s surrender and the Union winning the Civil War.

The incredible autograph album contains the autographs of President Abraham Lincoln, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, Future Vice President Schuyler Colfax, Secretary of State William H. Seward, Secretary of War Simon Cameron, Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, Edwin Bates, Lyman Trumbull, James Harlan, Reverdy Johnson, Alexander Ramsey, John Sherman, Benjamin Wade, James G. Blaine, George Hunt Pendleton, General Robert C. Schenck, Horatio Seymour, Richard Yates and probably many untold signatures we have not identified that hold significant value. All the signatures included in the book are high grade, especially the Presidents.
