Lewis Cass (1782-1866). Partially Printed Document Signed, "Lew Cass", 1p, on War Department bifold stationery measuring 7.875" x 9.875", Washington, D.C., April 15, 1835. Horizontal folds with separation not affecting text. Pencil notations from previous collector. Light toning. In near fine condition.

In full:

"You are hereby informed, that on the fifteenth ins. the President of the United States appointed you an Assistant Commissary of Subsistence in the service of the United States. You will immediately on receipt hereof, please to communicate to this Department, through the Adjutant General's Office, your acceptance or non acceptance of said appointment; and, in case of accepting you will report by letter to the Commissary General of Subsistence at Washington. / For Lieut. Moses Scott 5 Reg of Infantry."

After the War of 1812 broke out, Cass took command of the 3rd Ohio Volunteer Regiment. During the war, Cass conducted several military operations around the Canada-United States border. Cass became colonel of the 27th United States Infantry Regiment in February 1813. Soon after, he was promoted to brigadier general in the Regular Army. Cass took part in the Battle of the Thames, which saw the death of Tecumseh. As a reward for his military service, Cass was appointed Governor of the Michigan Territory by President James Madison in 1813, serving until 1831. Cass served as the 14th U.S. Secretary of War under Andrew Jackson from 1831 to 1836. As Secretary of War, he helped implement Jackson's policy of Indian removal. He represented Michigan in the U.S. Senate from 1849 to 1857 and served as the 22nd U.S. Secretary of State under President James Buchanan from 1857 to 1860.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. All items will ship with a signature required option, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third-Party Shipping Option: If a third-party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third-party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third-party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third-party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
