Letter to General Joseph Wheeler Re: Alleged Crimes Committed by His Men
Letter

A clerical copy of a letter written to General Joseph Wheeler by Lt Colonel Charles Geddings Rogers, A.I.G Army of Tennessee, concerning alleged deprivations committed by members of General Wheeler's command. 2pp of a bifolium, measuring 6.75" x 8.75", HQ Cavalry Corps, dated February 8, 1865. Rogers writes to describe several criminal events which implicated Wheeler's men, but were later found to have been committed by other soldiers or civilians. With flattened mail folds, light toning, and faint foxing. Overall very fine.

Reading in full:
"I have the honor to make the following statement as to depredations alleged to have been committed by members of your command. Near Courtland Ala., I was informed by an Officer of Genl Roddy's command that an attempt was made to rob a citizen of that neighborhood. This Officer interfered to prevent the robbery, and upon inquiring of the man as to what command he belonged, was informed that he was 'a member of 7th Mississippi Regt., Genl Wheeler's Command.' The 7th Miss does not and never did belong to your corps. In Georgia two horses were stolen by men representing that they belonged to your command. Fortunately these men were caught and found to be citizens, and never to have belonged to the Army. Eleven horses were stolen from a lady near Augusta. Eight of these horses were recovered, and upon investigation it was ascertained that they were taken by citizens of North Georgia, although they had represented that they belong to your command."

Joseph Wheeler (1836-1906) was a cavalry general in the Confederate Army and charged with the command of the 19th Alabama Infantry Regiment. After the war, Wheeler was elected to the House of Representatives for Alabama. During the Spanish-American War, at the age of 61, he was appointed by President McKinley to major general of volunteers.
