Description:

Ben-Gurion David 1886 - 1973 Ben-Gurion is certain that "no doubt that the main efforts of Egypt will be directed towards a war, Nasser cannot forget so soon the defeat of 1948. Thanks to our mercy he left Faluja and returned to Egypt." Israel had captured Nasser and four thousand Egyptian soldiers in Faluja during Israel's War of Independence; they were all released after Faluja was ceded to Israel.

Typed Letter Signed "D. Ben-Gurion" as Minister of Defense, in Hebrew, one page, 6" x 7.75", museum quality framed to 20.5" x 15.5". Hakiyra, Israel, August 21, 1955. To Ya'aklov Zur, Ambassador of Israel, France. On official State of Israel stationery. cc: Moshe Sharett, Prime Minister. Two file holes in blank right margin and center fold . Fully translated. Very fine condition with bold Ben-Gurion signature.

In full, "In answer to your letter, no doubt that the main efforts of Egypt will be directed towards a war, Nasser cannot forget so soon the defeat of 1948, even though he could afford to have forgotten it already. He could say that it happened during the rotting regime of King Farouk. In spite of that, I am certain that as an Egyptian soldier he would like to erase the stain, he himself was under siege in Faluja. Thanks to our mercy he left Faluja and returned to Egypt. Now not a rotting regime, but a military regime will be hit by Israel."

On May 15, 1948, one day after Israeli independence, Egyptian forces crossed into the former mandate and a column of them were stopped by the Israelis near Ashdod. The column retreated to and encamped at Faluja. Between October 1948 and February 1949, about 4,000 Egyptian troops were encircled by Israeli forces. Under the terms of the February 4, 1949 Israel-Egypt Armistice Agreement, the surrounded Egyptian forces, including 31-year-old Gamal Abdel Nasser, were allowed to evacuate, and the area was transferred to Israeli control. On July 23, 1952, Nasser and 89 other Free Officers overthrew King Farouk in an almost bloodless coup d'etat. In 1953, Nasser became Vice-Premier and Interior Minister, and in 1954, he became President and Prime Minister.
