This book was part of a trilogy of memoirs published under Leonid Brezhnev's name. As a part of the publicity campaign, Brezhnev was immediately awarded the Lenin Prize, the highest Soviet literary award, after their publication. The trilogy became the butt of numerous political jokes, as the Russian public considered it extremely unlikely that Brezhnev, who was visibly senile by then and had severe trouble speaking, was the true author. In the summer of 1987, the books were removed from bookstores and destroyed.

Leonid Brezhnev (1906-1982) was a Soviet politician who served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union between 1964 and 1982 and Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet between 1960 and 1964 and again between 1977 and 1982. His 18-year term as General Secretary was second only to Joseph Stalin's in duration. Lazar M. Kaganovich (1893-1991) was a Soviet politician and administrator, and one of Stalin's main associates. He served as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Ukraine (1925-1928 and again in 1947), Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union (1938-1944, 1946-1953), and First Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union (1953-1957). He helped Stalin seize power, demonstrating exceptional brutality towards those who threatened Stalin's regime and authorizing the executions of thousands of people.
