Description:

Leonard Bernstein Signed Contract & Publicity Photo

Two items relating to Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990), the prolific twentieth-century American composer and conductor, including a ca. 1950s contract signed by Bernstein as "Leonard Bernstein," and a publicity color photograph showing Bernstein conducting.

The lot is comprised of:

1. A 1p partly printed and partly typed document dating from the 1950s, signed by Bernstein as "Leonard Bernstein" in black felt tip pen on the third line. Also co-signed by 15 signers including Kenneth M. Rhoads, Jr.; Sibyl A. Sills; Len Merrill; Aldo Renon; Richard l. Rattazzi; William B. Nichols; Mildred Barth; Celia Weiner; Lillian B. Stein, and others. The signed contract authorized Robert L. Joseph and Jay I. Julien to serve as the "true and lawful attorney for the undersigned," during the process of creating and certifying a New York State limited partnership called "The Colombe Company." The document is fully signed but certain significant details-- such as the date--have been omitted, suggesting that this was probably a contemporary duplicate copy. Expected wear including light toning, a central horizontal fold, staple holes found along the top edge, isolated chips and closed tears, and darkened edges. Else very good to near fine. 8.375" x 13.875."

2. An 8" x 10" color glossy photograph depicting Bernstein jubilantly conducting an orchestra rehearsal, printed on Agfa photography paper. Isolated superficial marks, else pristine.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
