Johnson Lyndon

LBJ Campaign Items from a Secret Service Agent Present at JFK's Assassination

Two pieces of campaign jewelry produced for Lyndon B. Johnson's early 1960s political bids. Johnson ran as Kennedy's vice presidential running mate in 1960 and as Democratic Party presidential candidate in 1964. From the estate of Secret Service agent Warren "Woody" Taylor.

Including a gold-plated tie clasp and a silver-finished lapel pin. The bar pin is engraved "LBJ" and measures 1.625" l. The lapel pin is in the form of the continental United States, emblazoned "LBJ for the USA" in raised lettering. With a locking jewelry clutch backing and a 17-link cuff link type chain, measuring .875" l. Both with expected light surface wear, else near fine.

Democratic Party presidential hopeful John F. Kennedy selected Texas Senator Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-1973) as his vice presidential candidate in 1960. An elite Massachusetts progressive, Kennedy hoped that Johnson would balance the ticket by appealing to Southern conservatives. LBJ struggled to increase his vice presidential responsibilities and privileges once in office. Kennedy curbed Johnson's powers but delegated to him some significant projects, ranging from national security and diplomatic missions, to aeronautics, employment, and science initiatives.

Johnson continued his predecessor's liberal platform and even radicalized it following Kennedy's November 1963 assassination. In 1964, Johnson soundly defeated Republican Party presidential candidate and Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater, garnering 61% of the popular vote and 90% of the Electoral College. During his elected term, Johnson championed seminal Civil Rights legislation like the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. His Great Society platform promoted a cleaner, healthier, happier, richer, and better-educated America by promoting a number of ambitious domestic programs.

Warren "Woody" Taylor worked in the Secret Service for over 20 years, from 1961-1982. Assigned to Lyndon B. Johnson's Vice-Presidential Detail in the Dallas Motorcade, Taylor witnessed and later testified about the Kennedy assassination.
