Description:

Rock 'n Roll

Softbound 12-page Fall Edition "Biggest Show of Stars for '57" program signed by R&B singer LaVerne Baker (1929-1997) as "LaV Bak" to left of her close-up photo on page 3. The program has color wrappers and a black and white interior, measuring 9" x 11.875" overall. In near fine condition, with expected surface wear and isolated foxing to covers. Comes with a copy of a JSA Letter of Authenticity from a group lot.

The program, published by Super Enterprises, Inc., features profiles and pictures of the era's hottest rhythm and blues stars: Fats Domino, Buddy Holly and The Crickets, LaVerne Baker, Chuck Berry, The Drifters, Paul Anka, Clyde McPhatter, Frankie Lymon, The Diamonds, Buddy Knox, Jimmy Bowen and The Rhythm Orchids, The Everly Brothers, Eddie Cochran, Harold Cromer, as well as Paul Williams and his Orchestra.

LaVerne Baker has two full pages dedicated to her within the program; page 3, which is the signed close-up, and page 7, which includes a brief biography, and more photos of the petite bombshell in a bespangled mermaid dress that accentuates her hourglass figure. "If anybody in show business was born with pyrotechnics in her soul, it's LaVern [sic] Baker, for she first saw the light of day in that rip-roaring city of Chicago in the year 1929 - on Armistice Day!", Baker's biographical blurb begins.

Delores Williams, known also by her stage names Little Miss Sharecropper, Bea Baker, and LaVerne Baker, started her musical career as a teenaged night club singer in Chicago. Baker's recording of "Tweedle Dee Dee" (1955) reached number 14 on the U.S. Top 100 billboard. Our 1957 program mentions several contemporary Baker hits, including "Jim Dandy Got Married" and "Humpty, Dumpty".

A sensational music program from the late 1950s, documenting the rise of Rhythm and Blues and Rock 'n Roll in the United States!
