Revolutionary War
[London, England], Late 18th century
Late 18th C. Rev. War Engraving, "… American Colonies Declared themselves Independant [sic] of the King of England… July 4, 1776," from "Barnard's History"
Engraving
An engraving from "Barnard's New, Comprehensive and Complete History of England: From the Earliest Period of Authentic Information to the Middle of the Year MDCCCLXXXIII." Originally the book was "Printed for the Author and Published by Alex. Hogg, at No. 16, Pater-Noster Row" ca. 1781-1783, but this engraving could come from a later 1790s edition. Expected wear including minor edge loss just touching the bottom. Isolated insect damage affecting the print maker's printed name, as well as the top edge. Else near fine. 9" x 15."

The engraving is entitled in full: "The Manner in which the American Colonies Declared themselves Independant [sic] of the King of England, throughout the different Provinces, on July 4, 1776." After artist William Hamilton (1751-1801) and possibly by engraver George Nobel (fl.1784-1817). On laid paper. Printed "Engraved for Barnard's New Complete & Authentic History of England" along the top. Printed "Hamilton delin." at lower left, and "Noble sculp." at lower right, above the title/caption. With lovely decorative elements in the trompe l'oeil borders surrounding the image.

The engraving depicts a man on horseback reading the announcement to a group of cheering townspeople leaning out of open windows and crowding around a cobblestone square. The scene could have depicted Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Charleston, or any other major colonial city. Retail prices for this particular print fetch higher prices because of the desirable subject matter.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
