Description:

Hayes Rutherford 1822 - 1893 Highly unusual and desirable oversize sepia photograph depicting First Lady Lucy W. Hayes, inscribed and signed by President Rutherford B. Hayes to his secretary of state

William Evarts Highly unusual and desirable oversize sepia photograph depicting First Lady Lucy W. Hayes, 7" x 13", taken by Napoleon Sarony of New York, inscribed at the lower edge by the President "To Mr. Evarts, with kindest regards, Rutherford B. Hayes", also dated by him "1877" beneath the image. Sarony later produced a beautifully matched pair of cabinet-size photographs of President and Mrs. Hayes on October 2, 1878. Minor discoloration on the lower left corner barely detracting from this possibly unique signed image.

William Maxwell Evarts (1818-1901) was an American lawyer and statesman. Evarts was appointed an assistant United States district attorney and served from 1849-1853. In 1860 he was chairman of the New York delegation to the Republican National Convention. He was chief counsel for President Andrew Johnson during the impeachment trial, and from July 1868 until March 1869 he was Johnson's Attorney General of the United States. Evarts served as counsel for President-elect Rutherford B. Hayes, on behalf of the Republican Party, before the Electoral Commission in the disputed U.S. presidential election of 1876. During President Rutherford B. Hayes's administration he was United States Secretary of State. Fine.
