Three appraisers prepared this report on the rental of the land and slaves of George Cowan's estate for 1857 includes eight slaves, hired out for a total of $815.

The State of Miss Hinds County In the Probate Court April Term 1857
To the Honourable A. L. Dabney Judge we the undersigned appraisers appointed by your honourable Court at the January Term 1857 to vallue and appraise the hire of the negro slaves of the Estate of George Cowan deceased for the year 1857 and also to assess the rent of the Land of said Estate for the year 1857 ask leave respectfully to report that we met at the Late residence of said decedent in Hinds County on the 8th day of January 1857 and after being duly sworn proceede[d] to assess the vallue of said negro slaves (as shown to us by the admr S. George Cowan (1817-1856) was born in North Carolina. In 1841, he married Sarah Ann (1822-1850) in Hinds County, Mississippi, and they had at least four children. In 1850, he was a planter in Hinds County, where he owned $2,500 in real estate and 13 slaves. In 1851, he married Eliza A. McCall.
