Description:

L.H. Oswald Rare Book Aftermath of an Execution Written by Mother, Along with Her ALS Christmas Card Referring to its Publication

An extremely unusual lot sure to interest Kennedy assassination collectors. Comprised of a first edition copy of Aftermath of an Execution, a short book written by Marguerite Oswald (1907-1981), mother of suspected JFK assassination Lee Harvey Oswald (1929-1963); as well as her Christmas card autograph letter signed mentioning the upcoming publication of the book. After 42 years of business, this is the only copy of the book we have ever seen, besides a research copy found in the Fort Worth Public Library Digital Archives.

The lot includes:

1. First edition paperback copy of Marguerite Oswald, Aftermath of an Execution: The burial and final rites of Lee Harvey Oswald as told by his mother (Dallas, Texas: Challenge Press, 1965). 20pp. The binding is slightly damaged at bottom, and there is isolated minor foxing found on the upper right corner of the front cover. Else near fine. 8.5" x 11".

In the foreword, Marguerite explains her aim in writing this book: "I hope that I have been able to… bring about a better understanding of the Oswald family…I have tried to portray our feeling when our beloved son, brother, husband and father was murdered…"

The book contains an account of Lee Harvey Oswald's burial in Rose Hill Cemetery (now called Shannon Rose Hill Memorial Burial Park) in Fort Worth, Texas on November 25, 1963, the same day that President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) was interred at Arlington National Cemetery. Marguerite describes the many indignities her family suffered that day: how the church refused entry of the coffin into the chapel, and how there were so few attendees that reporters and police officials had to serve as pallbearers. Includes many candid black and white photographs of Marguerite, older brother Robert Oswald, widow Marina Prusakova Oswald, and children June and Audrey.

2. A Christmas card depicting seasonal bells fully engrossed by Marguerite Oswald and signed by her as "Marguerite Oswald / mother of / Lee Harvey Oswald". Marguerite writes in part: "Am writing a short book but do have a dead line to finish. I am very busy…" The bifold card is in immaculate condition. 7.75" x 3.875".
