Description:

George Eastman, the Inventor of the Kodak Camera, invites the President of the American Museum of Natural History, Dr. Henry Fairfield Osborn, to visit in May when "there will only be a few weeks more in the music season..."

GEORGE EASTMAN (1854-1932) Typed Letter Signed "Geo Eastman," 1p, 8" x 9.5". On his "Office of George Eastman / Rochester, N.Y." letterhead, April 18, 1927. To Dr. Henry Fairfield Osborn, New York City. Large 4.5"- long signature! Light rippling. Fine condition.

In full, "I am leaving for the South tonight for a three weeks' stay. When I get home about the 10th of May there will only be a few weeks more in the music season and I hope within those few weeks I will be able to have the long looked for visit from you and Mrs. Osborn. So I am writing this to ascertain whether Sunday, the 15th of May, or the 22nd would suit you. If you could come up Saturday night, or Sunday morning, and stay over Monday either of those weeks would be highly satisfactory to me, or even the 5th of June. My address for the next two weeks will be Enfield, North Carolina, Route 2, Box 11. Hoping to hear from you, I am, Sincerely yours..." Dates in May have been underlined in red pencil, probably by Dr. Osborn.

Dr. Henry Fairfield Osborn (1857-1935) was an American geologist, paleontologist, and eugenist who served as president of the American Museum of Natural History from 1908-1933 and the New York Zoological Society (Bronx Zoo) from 1909-1925. Osborn and Eastman were among the initial members of the Boone & Crockett Club founded by Theodore Roosevelt in 1888. Membership was limited to 100 of the foremost hunters of the time, who had taken trophy specimens of at least three of America's premier big-game species. Osborn was an associate Member, a category created for those who did not meet the hunting criterion.
