William and Mary of Orange came to the throne in 1689, following the deposition of James II and VII in what came to be known as the "Glorious Revolution". Prior to gaining the throne, the Protestant William had already participated in several wars against the powerful Catholic French ruler Louis XIV, and many Protestants praised William as a champion of their faith. After becoming king and queen, William and Mary were met with Jacobite resistance, particularly from Ireland. The Catholics in Ireland were backed by Franco-Irish Jacobites, who sent French forces in March 1689 to join the warring factions. The Battle of the Boyne (July 1, 1690) was the decisive battle, after which James fled back to France. William would soon be embroiled in another conflict with France, during the Nine Years' War (1688-1697). He would depart from England every spring to join the fight, returning each autumn. While William was away fighting, Marry was in charge of the realm.
