Reading in part:

"…God hath utterly scattered delivered up & subdued the heathen ye first rose up against us. Delivered up Philip to death, cleared ye coasts of Plimouth [sic], Narraganset [sic], Connecticut Quassay [sic] &c from those bloody & blasphemous heathen: But behold a new Enemy is broken out to the East & Northward who have layd waste ye Country &c…The garrison [at Stony Point] strong, two great pieces ye & many small arms & good store of provisions. Such a spirit of fear & cowardice is poured out on ye inhabitants of these parts yt it is exciting ominous. Ye Indians carry all before them by sea & land…have taken several vessels one with two great guns in it &c. This part of ye warr is like to be ye more difficult, because so far off from us: because so near ye French, who are reported to be amongst ye Indians…If you have not more than ordinary encouragement & a most evident call to stay in England I hope I shall see you here if ye Lord lengthens our lives to ye next summer…This day came news to hand that Mr. Joslin was deserted by those in the garrison whilst he was treating with ye Indians so that he & four men with three women were [illegible] to flee in ye night…"

King Philip's War was a conflict between numerous indigenous tribes of New England and the colonists along with their Native American allies, lasting from June 20, 1675, to April 12, 1678. The indigenous faction was led by Wampanoag chief Metacom, later known as King Philip, and consisted of the Wampanoag, Nipmuck, Pocumtuck, and Narragansett Indians. Conversely, the Mohegan and Mohawk tribes sided with the colonials. King Philip was killed by a group of rangers on August 12, 1676, near Mount Hope in Bristol, Rhode Island. His death effectively ended the war, but minor clashes continued for two more years until the Treaty of Casco was signed in 1678.

Thomas Thacher (1620-1678) was a minister at Boston’s Old South Church. He was also the author of the first medical publication printed in the colonies during the 17th century, writing guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of smallpox after an epidemic hit in the city of Boston from 1676-1677.
