Edward VIII of England King

King Edward VIII to Fred Corcoran, Laments on Not Playing Enough Golf

Single page typed letter signed, 5.75" x 7.75", on letterhead of 4, Route Du Champ D'Entertainment, Bois De Boulogne - Paris 16. Dated "March 10, 1966", and signed by Edward as Duke of Windsor "Edward / Duke of Windsor". Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, 6" x 4", neatly opened along top edge. Both in fine condition.

A once feisty King, who chose to abdicate his throne for the love of his life, moved to France after WWII to kick back and play golf. However this lovely letter from a now older Edward, Duke of Windsor, has him lamenting about his age and lack of golf in his life (but he still manages to watch watches the Masters on T.V.).  The letter with fantastic golf content written to Fred Corconan, one of the founders of the professional golf tour and was a golf tournament director, publicist, agent and business manager. Known around the world as "Mr. Golf," Corconan was one of the first non-players to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1975

Shown transcribed below:

"Dear Fred,

I feel very badly over not having written you before to thank you for your letter of October 7, and for sending me a copy of "Unplayable Lies".

I have read it with interest and got some good laughs as well. I have not played much golf lately. I guess it's matter of age creeping up on me.

I follow all the tournaments in Sports Illustrated and look forward to watching this year's "Masters" on T.V. as the Duchess and I are going to America next week.

Thanking you again for your book and with best wishes.

Sincerely Your's,

Edward

Duke of Windsor"

Edward VIII (Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David; 23 June 1894 – 28 May 1972) was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Empire, from 20 January 1936 until his abdication on 11 December the same year, after which he became the Duke of Windsor. Edward was the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary. He was named Prince of Wales on his sixteenth birthday, nine weeks after his father succeeded as king. As a young man, he served in the British Army during the First World War and undertook several overseas tours on behalf of his father.

Edward became king on his father's death in early 1936. However, he showed impatience with court protocol, and caused concern among politicians by his apparent disregard for established constitutional conventions. Only months into his reign, he caused a constitutional crisis by proposing to Wallis Simpson, an American who had divorced her first husband and was seeking a divorce from her second. The prime ministers of the United Kingdom and the Dominions opposed the marriage, arguing a divorced woman with two living ex-husbands was politically and socially unacceptable as a prospective queen consort. Additionally, such a marriage would have conflicted with Edward's status as the titular head of the Church of England, which at the time disapproved of remarriage after divorce if a former spouse was still alive. Edward knew the British government, led by Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, would resign if the marriage went ahead, which could have forced a general election and would ruin his status as a politically neutral constitutional monarch. When it became apparent he could not marry Wallis and remain on the throne, Edward abdicated. He was succeeded by his younger brother, George VI. With a reign of 326 days, Edward is one of the shortest-reigning monarchs in British history.

After his abdication, he was created Duke of Windsor. He married Wallis in France on 3 June 1937
