King Charles Autograph Letter Signed, as Prince, to Head Gardener at Highgrove House
ALS
A partial autograph letter signed by Charles III of England. 2pp (front and back), measuring 7.25" x 4.75", n.p., n.d. [ca. 1985-1991]. Signed "C" as the Prince of Wales and addressed to Trevor Jacobs, head gardener at Highgrove House. Charles notifies Jacobs about a delivery of plants and other plans for the residence's gardens. Written on personal letterhead and accompanied by an envelope marked "Internal Use Only." The letter has a flattened fold and faint edge toning and soiling. Light wear and soiling to the envelope. Boldly signed.

Reading in part:
"…Mr. Russell-Smith will be arranging for delivery of all the plants for the new pergola outside the walled garden & they should arrive just before I get down to H. G. on about 27th or 28th Nov. The iron framework for the hornbeams is going on well & presumably you may be able to dig the holes for the trees once you have found out from Mr. R-Smith when they are coming…"

Highgrove House was built in the late 18th century and was owned by various families until it was purchased in 1980 by the Duchy of Cornwall. The Duke of Cornwall, now Charles III, was subsequently appointed a tenant for life of Highgrove and remodelled the Georgian house with neo-classical additions in 1987. The gardens at Highgrove were overgrown and untended when Charles first moved in but have since flourished and now include rare trees, flowers and heirloom seeds. Designs were made in consultation with highly regarded gardeners like Rosemary Verey and naturalist Miriam Rothschild. Today, the gardens receive more than 30,000 visitors a year. Upon Charles' accension to the throne, control of the house has now been passed to William, Prince of Wales and the new Duke of Cornwall.
