"Desolation Angels" is a semi-autobiographical novel written by Kerouac. It was published in 1965, but was written years earlier, around the time On the Road was in the process of publication. Throughout the novel, Kerouac discusses his disenchantment with fame and complicated feelings towards the Beat Generation. The novel is also notable for being a relatively positive portrayal of homosexuality, despite its use of words that were at the time considered homophobic slurs.

Kenneth Rexroth (1905-1982) was an American poet and critical essayist. Although he did not consider himself a Beat poet, he was labelled "Father of the Beats" by Time magazine. Rexroth would help pave the groundwork for the San Francisco Renaissance movement and his poetry revolved around his fascination with transcendent love.
