Description:

John F. Kennedy Assassination
[Dallas, TX], [November 22, 1963]
[Kennedy Assassination] Secret Service Tie Clip Worn in Presidential Motorcade w/ Provenance Letter
Apparel

An evocative relic of the Kennedy assassination: an official Secret Service tie clip worn by one of the president's Secret Service agents within the motorcade. The clip is adorned by a blue-accented silver star, bearing text "Secret Service/ US" at center. Measures 1.5" in length, with an approximate 1.25" clasp. Exhibits light to moderate surface scratching throughout from evident use. Slight patina to either side of star. Else, very good.

Together with a notarized affidavit from former Secret Service member Martin Underwood (1936-2003) to collector Robert White, dated September 26, 1992. Reading in part:

"You are a good friend and I appreciate your concern and help. Another item which is historic is this Dallas tie clasp which is a Secret Service clasp [that] was in the motorcade in Dallas and used by my S.S. pal."

Underwood was the advance man for the Houston leg of Kennedy's trip the day before, November 21st. He subsequently did not travel with the presidential entourage in Dallas, and was, in fact, roused from sleep and rushed to the airport to join his fellow agents upon word of the assassination. He continued in the Secret Service through the Johnson years, and later told stories of his role in Dallas and as "one of LBJ's closest confidantes". Underwood had since become an infamous figure in various accounts of the day's events. Some claim, for example that he was aboard Air Force One during Johnson's swearing in, while others place him on Air Force Two when returning to Washington.
