Landis Kenesaw 1866 - 1944 Kenesaw Mountain Landis signed First Day Cover

First Day Cover envelope signed "Kenesaw M. Landis" in black steel-tip fountain pen along bottom edge of envelope front. Envelope is cream and features J.W. Clifford designed red and blue stamped graphic of running batter at left; also stamped with Cooperstown Centennial teal blue stamp at center. The envelope is sealed with a 3 cent Centennial of Baseball purple stamp postmarked from Cooperstown, NY on June 12, 1939 at upper right, and measures 6.5" x 3.75". The envelope is addressed to "C.E. Seabold, 4148 Wellington Ave., Chicago, Ill." In very fine condition, with some expected glue stains verso and minor corresponding stain at right side of envelope recto. Letter of Authenticity JSA included.

Kenesaw Mountain Landis (1866-1944) served as a federal judge before assuming the post of Commissioner of Baseball between 1920 and 1944. Landis is largely credited with restoring the reputation of organized baseball following the 1919 World Series scandal. Following the revelation that eight Chicago White Sox players deliberately threw off the game, Landis ordered their dismissal from the league and refused their requests for reinstatement.
