Katharine Hepburn Floats an Environmentalist Script by Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward
TLS
Fine content and association typed letter signed "Kate Hepburn" [n.p.], September 30, 1993, to Hollywood's original power couple Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. Rusted paperclip impression at top margin, otherwise very good. 1p. 5.5" x 8.5".

In part:

"…According to everything I've read about you this script – which was sent to me by a friend of mine – David Van Vleck – should have been sent to you – So here it is – And I hope you like it as much as I do…". At bottom, Hepburn adds her telephone number.

Accompanied by a photocopy of a typed letter signed by Joanne Woodward to Hepburn, October 21, 1993, acknowledging receipt of the script and letter. In part: "…Thank you so much for sending me the script, MOTHER NATURE. I found it to be a well thought out, interesting script on a subject which certainly affects all of us. You were right to send it to me – it's one of my greatest obsessions, the problems that are inflicting out environment…I wish that I were able to do it…May I say how much I admire you, not only as an actress, but as a human being…".

Newman and Woodward's devotion to philanthropy is well-documented, and it is no surprise that Hepburn would earmark the couple to read this script.

David B. Van Vleck (1929-2019) was a biologist and science professor at Middlebury College, and well-known for his interest in environmentalism.

Katharine Houghton Hepburn (1907 -2003) was a beloved American actress whose career as a Hollywood leading lady spanned over six decades. In 1946 Hepburn starred in "Undercurrent", a film noir with Robert Taylor and Robert Mitchum. Hepburn's performance was praised in the film, but generally it was disliked by critics.
