Description:

Cleghorn Kaiulani

Kaiulani, Hawaiian Crown Princess, lovely signature

Calling card signed by Hawaiian Crown Princess Victoria Kawekiu Kaiulani Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa Cleghorn (1875-1899) as "Kaiulani." Elegant and clean signature. Minor loss/surface griminess to corners recto where card was once mounted in a scrapbook, otherwise near fine. Cream colored stock card measures 3.25" x 1.875".

Princess Kaiulani wielded great cultural and political influence during her short lifetime. She was the daughter of Hawaiian Princess Likelike (1851-1887) and a Scottish businessman named Archibald Scott Cleghorn. Kaiulani was educated overseas in England, where she excelled in such academic subjects as foreign languages, history, literature, and math. When Kaiulani was appointed heir of her elderly aunt Queen Lili'uokalani (1838-1917) in 1891, she became a political activist, lobbying the United States to desist in their annexation plans of the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Princess Kaiulani probably signed this card sometime during her month-long trip to the United States in the winter of 1893. The Crown Princess traveled to New York, Boston, and Washington, DC, even meeting informally with acting U.S. President Grover Cleveland (1837-1908). The president, press, and American public were impressed by Kaiulani's eloquent arguments for sovereignty, but Congress approved annexation in 1898. Disheartened and in poor health, the "Peacock Princess" died at age 23.
