Description:

Howe Julia

3pp ALS on watermarked bifold cream stationery inscribed overall and signed by American author Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910) as “Julia Ward Howe.” at center of third page. In near fine condition, with expected paper folds. Each page measures 3.25" x 5.375".

From her home on 241 Beacon Street, Boston, Howe wrote a letter to a certain "Miss Howard" on April 10, 1902. The elderly woman of letters had been invited to an upcoming event on May 27. "Thanks for the kind invitation conveyed in your note. The day therein mentioned is my birthday. I cannot be quite sure as to what claims my family may make upon me at that time. May I leave my answer uncertain for a few days longer?", Howe wrote.

Howe's references to young ladies suggests that Miss Howard might have been a faculty member from a nearby Boston girl's school, such as Miss Hersey’s School for Girls. Howe continued: "I should particularly like to be with your company, and to say a word or two to you young people … Your's [sic] with thanks and kind regards to yourself and the young ladies."

Julia Ward Howe, the scholar, poet, playwright, abolitionist, feminist, and social reformer, is best known for her poem the “Battle Hymn of the Republic”. She lived in the four-story brownstone townhouse at 241 Beacon Street almost continuously between June 1881 and her death in 1910.
